Head to Head Topics

"Be it resolved that..."

  1. Psychiatrists should be directly involved in the interrogation of terrorist suspects.
  2. Substance abuse is not a disease of the human brain, but is rather a weakness of will, a moral failing, and a competent choice.
  3. A personality disorder should nullify responsibility for a criminal act.
  4. Neuroscience clearly shows that our brains fool us into thinking we have free will when we are really just stimuli responsive automatons.
  5. Stigma towards people with mental illness is justified because some are very dangerous and we must teach our children how to be safe.
  6. Doctors who have had a mental illness should never disclose this to their patients.
  7. Mandatory treatment of people with mental illness is required in all cases where a person lacks insight, even if they are not a risk to themselves or others.
  8. Street drugs for personal use should be decriminalized; Portugal got it right.
  9. Biological reductionism has ruined psychiatry.
  10.  We should use drugs to immediately erase people’s memories of traumatic events.
  11.  Psychologists should prescribe psychotropic medications.
  12. Other hot topics solicited from conference participants…
